Would it have the same affect as the using voodoo5 drivers on the voodoo3 trick? (ie: extra features)
or will it do nothing?
I remember once reading that creative was deciding (before the live! 5.1 series came out) that they were going to offer future software upgrades for the live! cars to make them 5.1 complient. (But than obviously opted for a new line of cars..).
Apperently it was noted that the live!'s core processor is very versitile, and that it supported software upgrades..
With that in mind, if i installed the 5.1 drivers, would i be able to preform 5.1 suround sound properly?
any insights appreciated. Thanks.

I had a similar post/question the other day. I installed the 5.1 drivers on the value card but I think you need to soldier something on the board itself also.

thanks guys for the input,

since my card isn't a value (it's a live oem i got at a show) you think that soldering thing is needed?
Where did you hear about using the 5.1 drivers on the value? (another forum/website?).
I'm going to try it out, we'll see what happens....

Uh wait a minute, whats this trick about installing voodoo5 drivers for a voodoo3?! Will windows in detect the voodoo5 driver as a voodoo3 driver???

yeah, something like that, apparently before 3dfx went bottom up, they were working on new features for the v3 (proper software t&l emulation i think, or something like that, they wanted to breath new life into it apparently). On the 3dfxgammers forum (before it too died) i read if one installs the v5 drivers on the v3 it runs better. I can't remember all the details though....

try it out. can't really go wrong, if things get screwed up, just revert to the old v3 drivers.

Will do. Pretty interesting, I really don't use the Voodoo3 much, as its in a computer thats down at the moment.
Ill give it a try though.

How did you install the 5.1 drivers?
When I execute the install proggie it tells me i don't have the 5.1 card, and then it exits..

They developed a software hsr, which is Hidden Surface Removal. Basically this calculates what can and can't be seen and then doesn't render what can't be seen saving massive amounts of memory bandwidth and fill rate, similar to the power vr cards except these cards were designed with this in mind and so cut other components where as the v5 was designed without this in mind as so got big speed boosts. This could boost Frame Rates to incredible levels even matching the Geforce 2 which makes nvidia not releasing drivers like this for their older cards almost criminal. But there were lots of bugs with it, for instance quake 3 my say it ran at 100fps but it would have terrible frame skipping and it looked like there was no z-buffer. At lower resolutions it was ok though (ironically where it was needed least)

okay, wen't to the site, read what the dude said, and guess what, same crap, still can't install the 5.1 drivers......
has anyone sucessfully preformed this task the way the guy says to?

every time I try to use the "SBL51.EXE" installer it tells me I can't install the drivers cause I don't have a Live! 5.1, is there a way to bypass this, maybe trick it to think I have a 5.1, or perhapes a manual install?

Try going into device manager, going into properties for the soundblaster driver, and select either reinstall/update driver. Have disk, browse to the soundblaster 5.1 files and let it fine the emulk.inf file (whatever *.inf 5.1 is using)... It is possible something is scanning your card for compatibility... I have been wondering the same thing myself since I have a Live retail and would love to have the 5.1 if possible.
