I need to bye a new cd-rom and was wondering if its better to just get a dvd-rom for one of these?

I'd definitely go with a DVD drive over any CD-ROM drive if you have the money. I just replaced my 50x Asus CD-ROM with a 16x Pioneer slot-loading DVD drive. The Pioneer cost me about $40 more than the Asus did, and it spins up faster, it's quieter, it's just as fast, and I can play DVDs on it.

And the extraction rates and sometimes transfer rates are higher. A good DVD player is worth the money. I only have a 10X DVD and it kicks my 40X CDROM all over the room Watching movies on your computer is a TOTAL plus... Get bored... watch a movie

If your willing to watch movies and make use for the DVD-Rom then I'd buy it anyday. If not just get either the Asus or Creative 52x, they both seem to have great quality.

what do you guys think?

The Pioneer or Panasonic are the same quality and they're great. Although if you have a black case, go for the Pioneer.
