What's making my system so slow?

Hey guys,

My systems is as follows;

P4 3.06Ghz
ASUS P4S800
ATI AIW 9800PRO
1GB PC 3200DDR
120GB HDD (8mb cache)
450W PSU
Win XP Home
DirectX 9.0a
Catalyst 3.10

The trouble is that it doesn't actually seem very good! In 3d games the performance is less than stunning and my 3dMark 2001 score is a mere 13K! This seems a lot less than many people with a similar system.

The HDD is pretty muc completely clear apart from 3dMark2001 and AOL. These are the first drivers installed although I have tried a number of different Cats in the past.

I was really just wondering whether anyone had any ideas as to what could be letting the machine down so much?

I've checked to make sure that I have the latest Bios/chipset drivers etc, and have updated my AGP drivers, but nothing seems to help....

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Is the XP a clean install?

Did you try running spyware test?

Is there program such as f@h or SETI@home running in the background?

What kind of ram timing are you using?

What kind of settings are you using in the BIOS?

Are you using HT? Some people seem to have performance problems when using HT.

I've just reformatted the HDD a reinstalled windows, I've only been online about 15mins since then and have only been to this and the SIS websites, so I doubt there is anything on my HDD that shouldn't be.

My Ram settings are 2.5,3,3,7.

My Bios settings are on default at the moment.

I have just run Sandra however, and in there and in DXDIAG it rates the chipset as the 9800 SE version. There is sticker on the card claiming to be the PRO version and when running 3dMark it shows up as the PRO version.....which do you think is right?

My default GPU speeds are 378MHZ Core and 337 Mem if that helps.

obviously the problem is AOL, it automatically downgrades any comptuer. But no, i would reccomend re-installing all the mobo and vid drivers.

Oh, I didn't answer this earlier....

is HT hyper threading? If so, then yes I am using it....
