wquiles said:I just ask this same question last week and I got several alternatives. From those, I felt that based on feedback from actual users, and given that there are great rebates for it on Best Buy (until today, I think) that the LiteON 411 for $79.99 (after rebates) was the best dual-format, 4x drive to buy.
I got mine last Tuesday

well I was looking to get one to complete my HTPC that I just built ..tom10167 said:Unless you're in a rush I wouldn't get one right now. 4x is slow as garbage, especially considering a dvd is WAY bigger than a tiny little 700meg cd. I'd wait until they at least start hitting 24x....

4X on a DVD-RW is not the same as 4X on a CD-RW.
4X on a DVD-RW is 5.4MB/S, while 32X on a CD-RW is only 4.8MB/S. A 52X CD-R will give you about 7.8MB/S while a 8X DVD-R will offer 10.8MB/S. DVD-RW's won't be making it much past 8X, and most likely not 24X.
A 24X DVD-R would have a writing speed of 32.4MB/S.

Could you go a little bit more in-depth on that? That just doesn't seem to make sense to me.
