This may sound wierd, but do these work well if rotated 90 degrees? Ie being tall instead of long?

I was going to get the NEC 1300A, with the firmware hack it can read just about any media you throw at it.

You don't have to run a hacked firmware on the ND-1300a. The compatibility issues with cheap media are fixed in the official 1.08 firmware (which my 2 week-old newegg drive came with). V1.09 firmware has just been released, it adds even more media support and makes no other changes.

even the 1.09 doesn't work with all media's plus the herrie hacked firmware removes the 2x video rip limit. so you can rip full dvd's in about 12 mins.

i have an NEC 1100A, NEC 1300A, Lite-on 411s and of the three i like the Lite-on the best. i however havent tried out herries firmware for the NEC.
