I installed an Asus A7S-VM today. A 128 Mb stick of PC-133 Sdram is really 112 Mb, according to BIOS. A known-good Crucial CL2 128 Mb DIMM, both DIMM slots, same horse caviar. Same with a known-good Samsung 128 Mb PC-133 CAS3 DIMM. 112 Mb, according to BIOS. The mainboard's gotta go back to the shop. I bought it locally, so that's good. How happy am I? Expletive deleted.

Anyone have a work around for this? I'd rather keep the mobo, of course. Naah, forget it.

hmm, I believe it might have something to do with the fact that a meg is actually 1024 kbytes, not 1000. It's late right now so I can't make the math work, but I think it has something to do with that.

I have 384 megs in my comp, although it still shows up as something else during the post.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That mobo has a problem. If it is 128meg then that is what it should be in the BIOS. hooziewhatsit is right a meg is 1024k and during POST it will show up as 131072K. If you are seeing 112 on 2 different DIMMs there is a problem. Notice the difference is 16meg. I would say that a connection is not being made to one part of the DIMM slot.

Thanks for your replies, hooziwhatsit and Ridenow! It turns out that this mainboard lets you adjust how much of your RAM that you want to devote to the built-in Vidcard. The default is 16 Mb, so: 128 - 16= 112 Mb. I have an older monitor on the Duron box that takes a long time to warm up, so I can't see the RAM count-up most of the time. When I can see it, say during reboot, it counts up to 112 Mb, yet also says the 16 Mb is reserved for the built-in Vidcard. Whew! With 256 Mb on the board, it counts-up to 240 Mb, and also lets you know that 16 Mb is set aside for Vidcard use.

So it's a "Shuh! I coulda had a V-8!" sitch. Thanks again!
