Damnit guys I'm too chicken to unlock my 2000+ myself. I want to turn down my multiplier so I can get my FSB up to 166 and get the full mem/FSB bandwidth I PAID FOR!!!!!

Hence, I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere on the web to purchase such items. Does AMD forbid such transactions?

Hoping MSI will come out with a BIOS update soon or the new thoroughbreds will run at 166FSB (that would rule)...

<sigh>

should've waited...

MSI KT3 ARU
ATHLON 2000+ (locked) but fsb@145 = 1.82gig
CORSAIR 2700XMS 256MB cas2 (waste)

Hmmm... i knew this would pop us sooner or later. I'm really not sure if unlocking the processor is illegal or not, I would think that it is since you are changing the product. The Athlon MP processors come factory unlocked, if your willin to pay the little bit extra for them. The process is really easy, ya just gotta make sure you have all the right tools and take your time.

As for theTbreds i'm hoping they are too, but i think it's just a new core, they may make the change to 166fsb with the sudden surge of 166fsb products. All that AMD would have to do is down adjust the multipliers on them. (i think?).

I also thought with those boards you could pick 133/166 cpu/mem settings, just like on my board you can choose 100/133 for when i had my duron and PC2100. That would get you your mem bandwidth.

Yes, you can buy them specifically unlocked, and no it isn't illegal in any sense to unlock them. If any modifications to the chips are done then the seller has to tell you about them, but other than that...

You can even buy pretested overclocked machines.
