I just noticed that I put the cable with the bigger ridges on my HDD and the one with smaller but more ridges on the CDROM...should I make it vise versa or does it even matter

BTW: I'm thinking the ridges are wires

yes change them around. The one with smaller ridges and more is for ata 66 and 100 for your hard drive and the other is for ata 33.

Guessing that the 100G drive in your sig is supposed to be an ATA100 or higher, heck yes!

The one with fewer ridges (wires) is meant only for ATA33. Anything higher than that must have the 80 wire cables to run run correctly at their intended speed.
CD's/DVD's/CD-RW's are about all ATA33, so the 40 wire cable is the one for them.

Shut down and switch them...Have a goodn'.

By ridges you mean wires....the one with the lesser larger wires is a standard 40 cable, while the other, with the smaller thiner wires is an 80 wire....the 80 wire cable should be used on the HD and the 40 on the cd-rom....the HD will benefit If you have an ATA100 HD and controller while the cd-rom won't as it's only MAX ata33 capable.

The 80 wire cables are meant for ata 66/100/133 standards while the 40 wire is only good for ata 33....

I'd definetly switch them around, pay attention to what color connector on the 80 wire cable is connected to your drives as well...BLACK is for the MASTER drive and GRAY is for the SLAVE.

dang...people post fast..LOL...no one had responded when i was typing mine up...LOL
