All over the place
I am in the market for a CPU as part of my Z490 build. So, I am assuming that the Z490 boards will also support a Rocket Lake chip. Is that correct? if so, then I am thinking I could get a i5 10600KF chip to keep me going until Rocket Lake arrives.

If it were you, would you get the i5 KF in the knowledge that you can upgrade when Rocket Lake chips becomes available? Or would you get the i9 10900KF and be done with it?

Edit: And as a supplemental question:
Would there be any noticeable difference in the real-world between the i5 KF chip and the i9 KF chip? And would there be any noticeable difference in performance if I migrated from the i5 Comet Lake to the Rocket Lake chips.

Also, Am I right? Does Rocket Lake supersede Comet Lake? And would they both be LGA1200?

Tbh I think the 10900k is a bit of a pointless chip. Overclocked the 10600k when partnered with a 2080ti will often match and sometimes beat the 10900k for gaming performance.

However if you are more into production tasks then it’s got to be a Ryzen build, a 3900x easily beats the 10900k in production tasks.

My answer would be if you are going for an intel build to get the 10600k. It looks to be the “best” chip out of the lot.

And in Theory yes you can use the z490 for rocket lake. However we have seen this before with intel. A board will work for the mid range chips but they will release a new board for the highest end chip. Will this happen again? I can’t say, but intels position at the moment is that rocket lake will work on z490.

10600kf should be fine for gaming right now. Future games may use more cores. Honestly the 10 series is not a huge improvement from even coffee lake. Hopefully Rocket Lake can make a difference.
