Why are "blowholes" so bad?

??? My case is very tight for space and one out of my possibly two possibilities for an exhaust (excluding the PSU) is a blowhole. I've read about how it can disrupt airflow, but can it be circumvented by attaching a fan to the bottom of my PSU and taping up the rear vents?

Go for it cow boy, if you set it up well blowholes are the go, i put two in my full tower case.
1 for a 90mm fan comming in at the bottom, and one for an 80mm fan at the top going out. It reduced my motherboard temp from 30^C to 22^c.
Also when you do the mod make sure you get as clear a path as possible for the air to flow.
But for me it meant the difference between having the cover on or not.
Good luck

i have three blowholes and they do a great job! one 120mm at the bottom, sucking in, and two 80mms at the top, blowing out. the only thing is that they're loud(!!).

The only fans I have are the stock on the video card, one Sunon 80mm at the rear, an Enermax 80mm at the front, and the SOrb on the cpu...all in a 17" mid tower

Hey DuronManiac, nice pic! Tells the thruth, bro!

I have 12 fans... OVERKILL! And adding a 120mm fan to the bottom someday, I have the filter ready. Kept the case cool, but not anymore, as I moved in with my GF. The temps are horrifying!

I would suggest you have to many fans....your fans are probably working against each other, is there any "air flow" through the box?

The only people who think blowholes are bad are those who have well-designed cases, where airflow is just peachy. Some cases are poorly designed, and properly placed blowholes are the best means of exhausting hot air.

I have a blowhole but it's because I only have a 60mm fan going out the back. The scary thing is that my temps are lower when I have my 120mm fan blowing air IN, not sucking it out. Basically it's designed to blow air in to the right of the HSF, and then the HSF sucks the nice cool air in and then blows it out the top. It took a lot of tinkering to come up with this one because it disn't sound logical when I first tried it. i thought the 2 fans would be fighting against each other.

Blowholes are not bad the only way they are bad is if you screw up . example:
I put a blowhole in the side of my Iwin full tower to lower temps it worked for a while but then I changed HSF cant use blow hole any more. now you got this hole in the side , so do some research first ,find out how much it is to replace your side panels or is it cheaper to get good HSF? just a thought

Keep cutting and make put a plexiglass window in man. That would look pretty cool.

can you put the fan on the other side possibly?

anyways, blowholes are good if done right, and in your situation, it is the only thing you have, so a blowhole that maybe not as good as a rear fan, is still better than nothing. Get your favorite tool to cut it(dremel or nibblers are the best) and go for it!

your fans must be in the wrong place, i have 4 120mm but have taken out 3 beacuse it was too loud and my crappy psu could not take it, i now have 1 120mm in the front (105cfm) and 1 92 at the back(?) it keeps my 950mhZ celeron below 25 all the time and my geforce very cool

yea I have the plexi in front of me but I cant get away from my puter long enough to do it ........OK I'm a lazy-*** I said it . Its not like I even have the side panel ON its always off but ... you know ... I'm lazy and I am pretty tweaked on the way home the last thing I need is a power tool in my hand on my own time . I will get around to it sooner or later but sometimes I forget stuff I have that thing called short term memory so then I went to the store and they were all out if that stuff and then this guy I know he has this thing and then I played DiabloII oops I forgot what we were talking about oh yea blowholoes

Oh yes, there is airflow thru the box... I just removed my Titan "Super System Blower" (to reduce noise), which sucks air at the the top and blows it out. Case temps raised ~1.5C. Gonna put it back, whatever my GF says...
