Some of the case are pricier and often reaches into the $500 range. Such as: http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g1/...ases-Cooler_Master_Cases_-_Painted-Page1.html

That is understandable because of the painting but not all cases have flashy paint jobs.

For example a new Lian Li 888 case originally sold for $500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112217

Even aluminum don't cost that much.

I seems to remember a nice looking all red Crossfire themed case (can't find it tho) that originally went for $800+

So why are some cases very expensive?

A lot of cases are overpriced simply because there is always someone willing to pay for them. Some cases do demand a premium for their quality of workmanship. i.e Silverstone, MM and so forth

Branding, just like Alienware computers, you can expect to pay more for a case from a "high end" brand, even if it's made in the same chinese factory.

Factors:

Quality of Build.
Quality of metal and plastics.
Manufacturing process.
Name Brand.

Nowadays, when you look at cases above $60 (w/ no PSU) you'll see the quality of the metal (usually steel) to go up, and the higher you go, you end up seeing aluminum builds.

Also, manufacturing them is a big factor. Lian Li and Silverstone manufacture their cases VERY differently than resellers like Rosewill which they get their cases from one manufacturer, who also manufactures for other reseller brands. It is up to the reseller to either pick or design their own front plate and paint.

I noticed that where I work, our cheap variety of cases pretty much all look the same inside. Same type of steel (cheap sheet metal SGCC) with the same layout inside, but the front of the cases are different from each other, just different style and color.

Warranty also affects the price. Our cheap cases carry almost NO warranty. If we receive a case from our vendor that's been damaged via shipping, we send it back to the vendor, not the manufacturer.

I also noticed that for aluminum cases, the good ones like Lian Li and Antec and silverstone use a thicker aluminum than the cheaper aluminum cases.

I think most of the time you are paying for just brand name... A friend from china was pickin up fake copy cases for like 50 bucks when the real one cost around 200... The build quality was about the same besides very very small defects. Lianli cases have a very nice build quality but any case over 200 is just brand pricing in my opinion.

Some designs are really good, no doubt bout that, like the totally/true tool less design for installing everything starting from psu, mobo to drives.

But, set aside from technicality, greed business point of view, if they're still selling like hot cakes at $200, don't see any reason why sell it on $50 ? :D

Theres always going to be stupid consumers so to answer your question:

Stupidity.

I smell post count raising almost-spam.

with more than 1400 total posts, not much point in a +1 post. Moderator can cut my post count for all I care, it won't affect what I like to do, ask questions, offer ideas and suggestions to other's questions, and buy & sell in classified section.

Nechen the guy who just called everyones modding pride to be something to the tune of
`Some of these people deserve "Virgin of the year" awards`

nice guy :D

if only I had a £1 for every PM asking who im fighting

solidarity OC brothers!
(except Nechen on account of not being here long by the looks ;) )

as for stupidity being the fact im not so sure.

if you have the desire and means to obtain it then its all good.

if however you have the desire and no means to obtain it then whos the bitter and more stupid?

Antec cases are well priced and you get what you pay for. The P series are all excellent!

only had the Antec300 under my nose before but the build quality and features for the spend where impressive.

Coolermaster wave case was another winner back in the day GPU`s wernt quite so big... just chopped a round 140mm hole with alu hex mesh round the CPU area for my buddie the other day and hes very happy for the temp drop. Im pleased it lives on because the build quality was very good.

i think the main reason is the features the case case has and the build quality...

i buy cheap 30-60 dollar cases for the rigs i sell all the time and the sheet metal they use is so thin the case just feels like a house of cards compared to my lian li v2000....

the side panel on my lian li is THICKER than the thickness of a quarter i swear i can throw my case down the stairs and it will be fine... i cant say the same for a rosewill case....
