Why can't I consistently hear my teammates when using my headset/mic with new z-640s?
I recently purchased a set of Logitech Z-640 speakers to use with my home-built (specs below). These speakers replaced the Harmon-Kardon speakers that Dell had shipped with my previous computer. I do much of my work from home, at which time I can use the speakers to play music. However, when my family is home, I need to use headsets.
I currently use a set of Plantronics 90 Analog headset/mic, which has one plug for the mic and the other plug for the speakers. I use these not only to listen to music, but also for voice chat while gaming. I generally use Yahoo Instant Messenger voice conferencing for this, as most of the people I game with can use this protocol for both instant messaging and for voice.
Since I installed the Z-640s, I have been having problems while connected to Yahoo Chat. I will be able to hear the other people just fine. I'll be able to enter a game with them and hear them. Then, for no apparent reason, I'll not hear them anymore. They, however, can hear me.
At first, I thought this might be a problem with the volume controls (fade v. center v. matrix), but since I can be chatting in a game and suddenly lose the ability to hear my teammates, I suspect it's not a volume issue. Furthermore, I can still hear the game sounds, so it's not a case of all audio output failing.
What could be the cause of these problems? Would getting a USB headset/mic solve them (in which case, what settings would I have to change on the comp?--I'm new to audio).
Many thanks for all of your help.
