i have a dell 600M, and unlike my friend's 700M, when i close the laptop the screen turns off but so does everything else (like wireless, and my program running). my little program moves the mouse, so i won't turn off the laptop screen because it looks like there's activity. is there any ways to shut down the screen and turn it back on using the keyboard/button? i'm afraid that my screen will go out soon if i keep leaving it on like that.

Check the power modes and make sure it doesn't try to hibernate or anything while the screen is closed.

Mine does hibernate on lid close by default but you can set it to take no action (besides turning off the screen) in the windows power management tools under power management and the advanced tab.

i have a problem with my screen turning off. in power management it is set to do nothing when i close my lid. but when i close my lid, it SHOULD turn off the screen but it don't. at first i thought that my switch next the the hinge was bad but when i set it to standby when i close the lid that works fine. anyone know what i can do? i think its something with windows but not sure. all i know it it used to work but don't now. and was able to get it to work before like if i keep 'playing' with it by removing the ACPI Lid in the device manager. any help is appreciated like always. thanks

i may have a solution. when i was re installing windows on my book, i closed my screen and it didn't turn off untill i installed the video driver. try that. uninstall it and/or the monitors and reinstall the video driver

Must be video driver related. I had a problem with my Dell when I closed the lid all my icons would be reconfigured like in a 800x600 resolution!? Installing the latest driver solved this for me as well...

or reinstall your ACPI drives.

there should also be a function key to turn the backlight off, usually near the brightness controls.
