Why didn't the GTX 800 series ever happen?

I remember reading stories (rumors? about the imminent release of the GTX 880/870 but it never happened. Why did Nvidia jump over any 800 series GPU's and go straight to the 900 series?

They didn't skip it, the 8xx series is a mobile lineup.
