cables are fine and seated properly. could it be my mobo? if so can i test mobo somehow? thanx

Have you tried cooling?
Stick a small Heatsink or HSF on any chips you can find, or get more air flow around it - ie a fan in the front.

Your PSU might be going daft, try using a different power lead from the PSU.

If you bought a different model, you might not have the same problem again - maybe the two HDDs you had were from a design that was damned from the start.

It looks like an overheating/power/lack of cooling problem.

There is also the probability that the replacement drive was refurbished and they didn't really fix the problem it had. Hard drives are well designed nowdays and the only real physical damage that can be inflicted on them usually involve voltage spikes, jarring severely while the drive is actively reading/writing, and power loss while reading/writing. (Even these usually don't cause damage)

Heat can be an issue but not on a cold boot.

imho I think you ran across a bad string of luck.

they IDed the prbo about it!
contact daniel ASAP, and tell him u need to see the article about the deskstar drvies from the front page, about a month old.
I think it was called
uhhh
something about brand X drive always dying... it has to do with the way u put the power connectors in, and the IDE connectors! look thru the news archive on the front page NOW be4 u crack teh casing really bad!! find that article!

i just noticed that i had the master cable plugged into the secondary but i doubt that shoul fry my drives. oh well, tanx again all, i appreciate ur help.

ACTUALLY...

If you only have 1 drive and attach to the 'Slave' connector, you may have problems. If I hook my IBM Deskstar 20gb hard drive to ANY other motherboard but my DFI PA61, it gives me about two lines of garbage where it should give the Hard Drive model #. Then it wont boot, saying there are no partitions defined.

installed new hard drive and plugged into the right connector an everythng works great.
thanx for all the help folks!!!!!!!!!
