I noticed that my new midtower case has 3 large round holes and 2 large rectangular holes on the side of the sheet metal frame that is positioned under where the mobo sits. I haven't seen this before, and so I'm wondering what purpose they are meant to have; ie. whether to allow more air to circulate over the bottom of the mobo, or to install small fans?

(the rectangular holes are level with the sheet metal, but the 3 round holes are on a frame, about 1/2" above the sheet metal surface, as if to make room for a fan that won't be too close to the mobo?)

hmm...

probably because it helps in the quarter mile?? less weight more aerodynamic, yup... fastest athlon at Talledega........... :)

hehe sorry i could not resist :)

i stuck a hole in my mb tray.....so i can interchange coolers easily without havin to take the mobo off...

hard to say. you can try emailing the manufacturer of the case. what is it? post a link to it.
the person who put holes to change out his cooler - thats a sweet idea.
i just know that i don't have that problem. the case for my 40 pound is 100% pure steal. ever case makes a quality case.

also: LMAO at the quarter mile joke.

LMAO.

The holes are probably to reduce weight and to help airflow. Many cases I have seen
have holes back there.

I cut several holes in my motherboard tray to allow a 120mm fan
to blow on the back of the mobo & now the CPU socket temps are
much improved. Didn't help with my OC, but any time you can make something
run cooler is a step in the right direction.

The holes are there to reduce weight so that they dont' have to ship it. And it also happens to let a little more air flow to the mobo. Wow susq that is a lot of holes. I did the same to my tray, except it was with the intent to reduce weight throughout my case, a little bit of metal here and there adds up(I ended up taking 10 pounds of the weight of my case). Would post links, but IMG Shack is down for maintenance.

Yeah, my mobo tray is about 50% lighter than before. No problem with trapped
hot air between the mobo and tray now. :D

BTW ..... you can attach images to your post like I did above.
