Well, I backtracked my MSI board to an older BIOS from what I read here, and right now I'm at a FSB of 143, and once tested for a bit I'll go higer.

Thing is, what's the point? Sure, it's nice to see how high you can go and obviously a faster computer is, well, faster.

I definetely want to see how high I can take it, but once there what benefits do I have running it overclocked 24/7? Would it be better to just jot down the settings and pump it up once in a while?

Just curious what all of you think.

Considering everything is perfectly stable in its overclocked state, this is my prime reason for overclocking:

According to Pricewatch AMD XP 1600 lowest price = $92
According to Pricewatch AMD XP 2000 lowest price = $194

I have 4 XP 1600s running at XP 2000 specs. Technically, I have saved $408 for equal performance.

This does not account for the XP 1700 and XP 2000 I also have that are overclocked and would account for additional savings.

Right, and that's why the CPU people lock them up, so we can't get more than we pay for out of our systems.

They say it's to protect consumers, but that's totally bogus.

We found out a way to make our computers run faster for LESS than the price of their most expensive stuff and get the same performance, so they try to shut us down.

Nobody has tried to shut us down, if they had they would have.

Well, I know how you feel, but I don't really think that's how it is. I think the engineers who come up with this stuff know how fast they can run, but they have to make sure that the rated speed is something they can run with substandard cooling, computers that are full of dust, etc. For everyone else out there. As Wyrmaster said, they could make it so difficul to overclock that it wouldn't be worth the trouble. But I'm glad they haven't!

I overclock because its a hobby. A useful one. Granted, all I do with my computer is play Counter-Strike, chat on AIM and listen to mp3s, but it's a heck of a lot more useful than say...an RC airplane? RC cars? Those hobbies are too expensive and the fun runs out. You can talk online for hours while DLing stuff and browsing and playing games. Overclocking has so many benefits that I can go on forever.

Why overclock?

Because you can.
Because its fun.
Bragging rights.
To justify the $ spent on your computer.

to fold MORE PROTIENS. Seriously, besides saying that you can, what is the point of seti, you've searched the sky twice, and found nothing, nadda, zipolla. With Folding, they have folded 4 protiens so far. This is finding a cure for many diseases that plague us today. It's really down to what you want more, find some aliens, or cure a diseases.

Haha, the bragging rights are cool. Too bad I'm the only nerd I know... I only know one guy who cares, and even he doesn't care too much. I've only been in the bay area for like 7-8 months, and I asked this friend of mine if he knew where I could get heatsinks, and he's all like, "What are heatsinks?"

And the tinkering. That's fun too.

Anyways, for my first time I got my XP 1800 @ XP 2000 levels so far, and my new power supply allowed me to drop the voltage and still get it stable (as far as I've tested it thus far). I'm going for 1.7GHz, probably won't be stable but I just wanna do it.

I've been testing stability for a while at each step, but over the next few days I'll probably find the ideal settings. Wish me luck!

well what stepping is it? it shouldent be too hard to get there with the right stepping for instance my 1600+ agnga Y is running 1.7ghz with default vcore i am water cooled but its been stable up pretty high :)

You are very naive if you think the only outcome of fiddling with the human genome is curing diseases. What happens when they figure out you have the genetic disposition for some fatal and incurable disease and insurance companies will no longer insure you?

I have no idea :) I don't feel like taking off the heatsink and all that just to find out. Like I said, I'm a newbie overclocker so I just put my machine together and started toying around with it.

Oh, and I crashed at 146 FSB, so it seems that 1.67GHz is my top. I'll play around with it some more (I havn't had much time lately) cuz I really wanna hit 1.7.

..and if it were not for overclockers people would still be using the PI 66 mhz , they love us cuz when we fry our chips we buy more and then fry them or want to go even faster so I think the big guys love overclockers ,except intel they are still p*ssed that amd is kicking the crap out of them but ...different thread more later
