Why the Wii is wonderfull

Yeah I have a similiar story. My older sister never really plays video games but she seems to love playing the Wii. My brother-in-law and her play Wii sports together all the time and also Trauma Center.

All it takes for me:
My wife-to-be is begging me to play video games...

why would I not sacrifice 100 bulls in the name of whatever god inspired this system? come on, it went from "spend more time with me instead of video games" to "get your butt over hear so we can play wii tennis"

I don't know, Nintendo has kind of lost their appeal since the days of old.

What happened to my GoldenEye 64, Perfect Dark, Ocarina of Time, Crusin USA (come on, what game had bugsplats on the winshield when driving in first person?), Super Mario 64, MarioKart?

I think Wii is interesting, probably more interesting when inebriated, but for now I think my money is better spent in the PC market where games have continued to set new benchmarks other than innovative control schemes.

EDIT: It came off like I hated the Wii, I don't, but I think that it's important to consider the PC in this debate as well

The first night i had my wii my dad played more then me and he beat me. :) my sister and mom have yet to try but i think they will love it

I just came home to find my sister and brother-in-law and all their friends in my room playing my wii haha. Mind you they are 30.

my wife can't wait to get a wii. She loves the thought of actually 'being inside' the game, instead of trying to figure out dozens of buttons.

Today, my dad and his girlfriend arrived at my apartment. My dad needed some paperwork done, and they wanted to chill out for a bit. So I fired up my Wii.

Within 10 minutes, my dad's girlfriend had the Mii creator figured out and was flying through the menus. Shortly thereafter, my father was doing the same.

Then, it was time for some Wiisports Bowling. Seeing as it's not Shabas, I chose Walter, and her and I threw down. I ended up winning, but she had an absolute blast. Then it was on to Wiisports Tennis. My dad picked this one up pretty quickly, and got pretty good relatively quickly. They both got really into it, and both had a blast.

I can count the number of times my father has played a video game on one hand, and have fingers to spare. He thought this was the coolest game he's ever played in the history of forever. It was easy, intuitive and fun. That's just what drew him to it after I showed him the basics.

It was interesting.

I had the same type of experience when I took my system home to show the family. My dad ended up playing Wii for a couple hours with my friends and was at the point where he was beating them at tennis and bowling. For my dad to play video games, let alone for a couple hours, is very impressive. Not only that, but my mom (who I've never seen play a video game) was having fun hitting homeruns. I almost died of shock when I saw her playing as that was the first time I've seen something like that. After seeing that I was pretty impressed with the Wii.

The sad thing is I don't think 3rd party developers will effectively implement the new controls until later in the Wii's lifetime. The only games I look forward to are Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Galaxy.

Also, I believe Nintendo announced they are adding DVD players to the Wii come 2007.

It has a dvd drive, I think all it lacks is the software. Any info if this will be an update or something only on new consoles?

I like the "man breaks TV recreates event on safer medium"

I agree that I was surprised to see how thin the strap gets at the connection point....but I have never even come close to having this thing fly out of my hand.

For anyone who says the controller is gimmiky....it's not, it's really acurate and after about 15 hours of Zelda I can say it's very intuitive and works great.
What is gimmiky is the sixaxis...Sony clearly saw Nintendo was having motion sensing and made this a last minute bolt on feature so they can say "oh look you can tilt ours" thats whats gimmiky

I for one agree with unseen. I think nintendo has produced a genuinely fun product this time around. I haven't gotten a Wii yet, but I think I just might come the first of the new year. Sure, the graphics aren't the best, but the fun people are having with the Wii Sports is very obvious. Like Oni said, sure Nintendo probably won't be number 1, but they will probably be profitable, which is all a business can really ask for, right?

Oh pls! Anything but my post count!

most of the broken straps, as someone pointed out before look more like they were cut, or at least cut thinner, to purposely make it break.

what are the odds someone has a camera out while someone is playing their Wii and the strap "happens" to break that one time they are being filmed...

Please follow forum protocol. Keep this thread on topic. Provoking forum moderators is not a good idea.

Back on topic:

This thread has piqued my interest. I have never been comfortable with a consol and all my gaming needs are satisfied by my PC. What would a Wii with all the bells and whistles cost? Can somebody kindly summerize things to look forward to, from a first-timer's perspective?

I would normally agree, except that the people over at IGN put a hole in their wall playing some sports Wii game. The video is on their site somewhere(only showing the hole, and telling the story, so they did not have the camera out at the time). All in all if a reliable company is reviewing your game, and the safeguard strap breaks sending your smooth square controller flying into the wall, I would be at least a little bit worried. To me, it just doesn't make sense for them to make such a smooth controller, with no easy way to grip it with a sweaty hand.

Anyone with a Wii should know by now that they should take some precuations using their controller. Sandpaper might be a good idea, =)
