Why This New CD Could Change Storage

I have ~73 TB of storage, 53TB of media and the rest as personal things, pictures, video, etc. I’d prefer something that is re-writable or can be written to multiple times. Currently that’s managing several 6TB HDDs and is a PITA. Over time, the media is growing, and while nowhere near the PB range, certainly more simple to have a single (probably few for redundancy) copy of small media for cold storage.
That's my big thing about it. I don't have much need for single-write storage of this capacity. Maybe it would be an improvement for data centers that are backing up to tape. But ultimately it doesn't seem to solve a problem for the average data hoarder. (I have around the same amount of space on one of my NAS devices, and some more on another as a backup)

the single write storage from what i see. could be used for archiving old movies vs relying on them trying to keep the original film from catching fire ect. They do a 1:1 transfer in video format (raw video if possible) then archive it to those disc's. will take up alot less space and they could archive it by decade or just per movie. Could just be me but i would rather have a disc i can rely on getting the data from. Opposed to some cloud system that could be hacked or have internet connection issues.

i have not been able to find a date on this, but sony mini discs are still being made. even though sony stopped making them in 2013.

I thought tapes were dead, even as backups. I saw many data centers replacing them, but I didn't really check what they are using now. It looks like there are new options at 50TB+ 300mbps+, which seems like a hard to beat option considering that tapes last long years.

Tape is still used by "prosumers," in particular with used hardware. LTO-6 is the usual go-to given the price point. LTO-7 and up quickly gets stupidly expensive. But its capacities aren't great. In that context, for periodic backups, it's fine and the speed doesn't matter that much.

When I'd left a previous company (2014), monstrous StorageTek tape libraries were still very much in use. Granted, that was 10 years ago. Given the relative little expense that HDDs are, and the ever increasing capacities, these will continue to be the de facto medium for a while. Many have suggested for years that SSDs will take over. For long term storage and capacity, that's hardly been the case.

Jesus... even the utility I worked at moved off of tape (disk to disk to offsite backup piped over via a dedicated line) 10 years ago. Also are these rewriteable like tape (didn't watch th3 vid)?

We did that and got rid of our STK Silo (I think we were on LTO-3/4 at the time in a SL8500). But yeah, I figured people would be moving to disk (it was ssd-based this device) as we were behind the times 10 years ago when we made the transition.

There was an Ancient Aliens episode about writing onto crystals and sending them into space. Somehow, I forgot about it. Crystal writers are already in use, but I guess can't buy them just like that ;)

That show is so fake. We will never know if there is life out of our solar system. The main reason is distance. We will never be able to go so fast in order to get to our nearest Nabors Alpha Centorey. The amount of time it would take is just crazy. There could be life out there but I bet they have same problem.

This show has a lot of truth and asks many questions, which are sometimes proven in time (at least some historical and technological). However, early episodes were more about history and theories, while after 10+ years they more often have statements that some things for sure exist/happened.
This show is great, but I'm not saying that everything is true. You need to have a brain to separate theories from facts. They have great episodes about history that really happened and ancient creations that still stand. One quick fact that is on topic (so we won't go too far from the CDs) is that they actually wrote the Bible on a small silica plate and presented the process and the result. It doesn't matter that in the same episode there were theories about communication with aliens. What is important is that they actually presented how to write a lot of data on tiny silica plates, which was impossible a couple of years ago.

I know I have watched it but a lot of the stuff seems so farfetched. I do agree some of the stuff has proof on paper just like mathematics or physics.
