Alright, I had my roomate has been having computer problems and I'm stuck. Previously his ram went bad, and that was the problem last time. Now, after running mem test, and the HD tools, they are both fine. Now the problem is it won't boot into windows. At first it would just crash and shut down on him randomly, but now it won't load up anything even when trying safe mode. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

yes, and now it gets further like its going to load windows up in anything i try (safe or last known) and then it starts to load windows up and reboots itself.

anyone? sorry for bumping but just wantin to get his computer up and runnin since were gettin ready for finals and everything.

Check all the fans. The fan on the CPU and the case fans.

Fans pickup dust and crap over time. If the fan on the CPU stopped working, the CPU could be overheating during bootup and then it will shut itself down when it gets too hot - which could be during the bootup.

Another possibility is that the power supply has just got so old that its getting stressed out now. To know for sure, it would be best if you could tell us what the PSU is (Wattage wise) and what other components are in the case.

I can't really think of any other things that could cause that, apart from maybe malfunctioning RAM or something. But if its not fans getting stuck, then my second guess would probably be a software issue. Whatever the issue is though, even software, its fixable.

K, powersupply was my next culprit, i'm gonna try to swap mine out and see what happens. This has happened once before so I'm not 100% sure, the ram was bad and then we fixed it with a fresh install of windows.
Components:
DFI nf-4
3500+
X800xl
2x512 coursair (bh5)
WD 320gb SATA
Antec 420W power supply
Pioneer DVD-RW
Zahlman 7700

Fans aren't an issue as I have had the side off and everything is working fine. I think its either the PSU or maybe just a software deal where my roomie has been dling **** that is messin that stuff up. I'm just puzzled and its getting frustraiting. Thanks again guys.

Yeah PSU would be worth checking. Especially if you can check it with another PSU?

Other than that, I would guess that its just a software issue. A virus, spyware, corrupted files, or just a generally screwed up windows. If any of those are the cause, you can try to fix them individually, or you can back up all the important data (onto another hard drive or writeable DVD/CD's etc..) and then format the disk and re-install windows.

By the way, theres a possibility it could be the hard drive itself. Maybe check the power and data leads into that to check they are still in securely. It could be the disk is starting to flake out, but I wouldn't know much about that. I've never had a hard disk die on me. I do know they need a defrag from time to time though, and bad sectors are very common when you use the disk alot, and lots is getting deleted regularly and new stuff downloaded etc.

ANother possibility is that windows is completely screwed over, I have known this issue before. But I would check this first due to the fact what is the point in replacing hardware, if it does not need to be replaced. Even if it is a fresh install try it again, with a different disk, somethimes this also does make a difference. To be honest, I have had to install XP of three disks before, cos some idoit scrated each one of them at work.
