well I went from a ata66 5400rpm hdd to a ata100 7200rpm disk and noticed sweet fa...although I have seen someone just get a hd with a bigger cache and a hella difference appear...

if anything I hear using your hdd lower that what it supports lengthens it life, and the way they are dropping like flies these days I would say that is a good thing...
