Will updating my bios help me OC more?

I have an abit bh6 ver. 1.0x id:kg and was curious if updating the bios would allow me to OC more (will an update give more FSB options) or fix anything else worthwhile (I'm kind of hesitant changing my bios unless there will be a benefit dangling in front of me). I need to kick my p3 500@560 in the pants, right now the next bus step is just too much for my PCI junk and I need more power for free.

You will have to check on what bios version you have now then read at the above link and see what changes the more recent bios have and see if they are anything usefull to you.

Welcome to OC.com :)
There are a couple of things a bios flash may help with but more fsb options won't be one. I would recommend flashing to the ss bios though. To get'er going a bit more, first make sure you have good cooling and then bump the voltage a little. You don't go into much detail about yer sys (this could be helpful) and ya don't mention what happens when ya bump up the fsb. LMK :)

I have been running at 112 FSB for over a year on pc100 ram and just recently got pc133. I tried to run at 124 FSB, but the pci bus is just too fast (41 I think, the bios doesn't tell). Could a new bios program allow me to alter the cpu/pci ratio possibly, so I could get to 620?

The link to the award flash utility on abit's site has been down, can I use an older version of it that I have? Also, what if any swithces do I need to use if any when flashing my bios? How do I tell?

Hey antman, if ya want I can shoot the awdflash.exe and the ss bios files to ya LMK

Ooops, kinda ignored yer other ?'s.
Yeah, that's putting yer pci kinda out there, but depending on your hardware 41.3 MHz is do'able. I have run that with my BX6r2. When I first tried it messed up some files on my old hd. Since I got something newer it wasn't a prob. Some hardware can do it and some can't. It's kinda "luck of the draw."

the new bios won't allow you to alter the pci divider as this is controlled by the bx chipset as far as I know which changes it automatically at a certain speed (It goes off the bsel otptions I think)

I just got ahold of the award flash and did the ss bios update. No new fsb options or pci divider options. I guess I'll have to search for free MHz somewhere else now...

If your current bios has fsb options then it is rare for a new bios to have more, though sometimes they don't put some of the fsb options the clock gen is capable of in which may be added in a later bios or just accessed with SoftFSB.

Phil......what actually limits FSB options? ...is it the clock generator or the microcode loaded in the BIOS?
Could a BIOS hack enable more FSB options..ie. higher ones ..or is this limited by the particular clock generator part? I'm sort of wondering about this.......hehe.. along with the rumored Tualatin/BX compatibility.

All I want for Christmas is to be able to mod my board to run 170+FSB. Soyo' 6ba+3...4...&ATA100 stop @ 155. Is something like this possible.

FSB options are limitted by the PLL IC itself, however not all mobos give you all the options available. You can check Softfsb (if your chip is supported) or you can conact the chip manufacturer and get a spec sheet. :)

LutaWicasa....plan A would probably work 'cept the files have been pulled...... new I should of kept that utility.
Plan B would be getting the spec's on the chip. I actually have maker and part# .....IC Works
"W196x" ....then armed with the spec's how would a guy manipulate the chip?

Well, with that PLL IC you top out at 155 MHz FSB. This is as high as that chip can go. You'd have to manage to get something like those Japanese Turbo PLL's.

Oh, by the way IC Works is now Cypress.

Now that you mentioned that.....it's coming back to me. I did download SoftFSB once and wanted to see how much more I could raise the FSB passed stock settings. I was able to get the chip ID'ed but couldn't raise the FSB passed 155. I don't remember if the author had a read-me that stated "if this won't raise the FSB ...the chip is probably @ max".......or something like that (he probably did). That would explain why I deleted the proggy.

Now I have to find a Japanese friend.
thx, LutaWicasa
