Previously, on my old system, i had a classic athlon 850@900mhz, 256mb SDRAM, a Geforce 1, and a 20gb 7200rpm Western Digital ata66 hardrive.

My new pc is in my sig.

On my old system i was running winxp pro and it was not smooth at all. what i mean by this is that things like the different menus from the start bar would always take a long time to open, and everything other than games and externaml programs would feel rather jerky. right now on my new pc i have win2k pro, but since i am really gettting into digital photographing a lot, i like how winxp deals with media and how it automatically detects cameras and puts stuff in a slideshow for you.

Does anybdoy with a similar system to me have any troubles w/ xp?

My system, as well as my bros who is on a 1.4 Ghz athlon with 256 MB DDR RAM runs just fine in windows XP pro. Maybe its the SDRAM of yours? Try getting more like 512 or 768

alot of the "eye candy" of xp can slow things down a bit. you can go into your sys properties and disable some of this, under the advaced tab, then performance. other programs such as tweak xp (not from microsoft) can also help by changing some settings. it is a limited trial thing-shareware-but its limited to 30 "uses" so dont set it to auto start when the comp starts.

I just set the theme to look like Win 2K pro. It run's a lot smoother and faster that way. I also changed the setting's for best performance in the performance tab in the system properties. I only have menue shadow's, and mouse shadow's enabled. Beside's those bright and gaudy color's get to you after a while. For me it's not how pretty it look's, it's how well it run's.

I have a Tbird 1100 and 512MB RAM. Runs v. nicely with all the eye candy enabled :D

My friend has XP on a Celly300/256MB RAM. She runs it looking like 2k pro - its too slow otherwise.

RAM is the main thing with XP. Get 384MB at least.
