I google the the problem I'm having and it's not the problem that most seem to suggest that it is which is Auto arrange icons being Enable which mine is not.

What happens to me it is like the Auto arrange icons where the icons try and arrange themselves in alphabetical order,my problem is if I save a picture and drag it to my desktop or a file I downloaded the pic or file will sometimes but not always jump into one of the rows of my desktop icons.

Let me see if I understand....because all icons on your desktop are 'desktop icons'....

...so when you save something/move a file to desktop it appears where you don't want it?

I thought it just goes to the first 'open' space available.... then the user moves it where needed. At least, thats how I've always done it.

A picture is worth 1000 words... what does your desktop look like? Can you show a before and after you drop a file that goes to the 'wrong' place so we can see what you're saying?

I've seen similar, but don't know of a workaround or solution. Sometimes if I save a file to the desktop, it takes the top left spot. I normally have something there, so it pushes everything else around. Doesn't always happen, don't know what the trigger is.

After reading Mack's post... I do have auto arrange enabled, FYI. So maybe that's why new files do not move my icons around?

I had this on wife's pc, she had activated one of the Windows Themes by mistake and it was overriding the auto arrange setting. Right click desktop and personalize if I remember right, one of the settings there should fix it. Sorry, I know it's vague, but this was a few years ago 😅

I haven't tried what this guy is showing in the video but I may give it a shot when I get a chance.

DesktopOK is a good option, I have it setup and rearrange everything they way I want it every reboot.

I'm not sure if it applies to your issue (Might be reading it wrong), but I thought I should mention it anyway :)

Also besides above is you rez getting changed for different reasons ? That would rearrange them.

No sometimes the file will hop into a row and bump everything else creating a big mess.

Thanks for that program I will give it try because it looks like it has a way to lock the desktop icons where you want them once you install the program.
