My Asrock x79 Extreme 4 has two SATA controllers: the native
Intel one and an Asmedia one running off PCIe. If I put the
native Intel one into RAID mode (to use a SSD cache for my
spinner) can I still keep the Asmedia controller in AHCI mode
(for an eSATA HDD)?

I know the BIOS supports switching each, separate SATA
controller to its own mode, but will both Windows XP and
Windows 7 have a problem w/two different SATA controllers
in different modes?

Is there a way to do this without re-installing either or
both OS's?

Well this worked. I have the ASMedia SATA controller in
AHCI and the native Intel x79 SATA controller in RAID.

I'd just try it. I've never done it myself. I suspect that XP won't like the Asmedia chip very much, but give it a go.

Also, the Asmedia chip probably will only let you do IDE, in my experience, when raid is active on the other chipset.
