I want to create a backup on an external drive under Windows7 Pro and I'm given the choice of various volumes: Simple, Spanned, Striped or Mirrored. But which to choose for best data safety?

You have a RAID array. it's asking you how you want to back things up? Wikopedia has a great explaination of the different arrays. however to keep things short, Mirrorered is the safest. creating 2 exact copies on each of your WD6401AALS hard drives. Google 'RAID wiki'

If it's just for a backup, then simple is fine. If you think about it, the backup is already a mirror of your data.
