That is so much BS. I hope they DO make it OEM only and it encourages their 64bit OS to become widely pirated because of their own stupidity. I've got an MSDN subscription so it has zero effect on me personally... but making this OEM only would be a huge blow to AMD and enthusiest.

But we can buy windows xp OEM editions all over the net now. I always buy the OEM version sience there alway like ½ the cost of the retail boxes. I think there will still be a way to get it.

The thing is that they won't be releasing the OEM versions for public purchase, only for OEM companies (Dell, Gateway etc).

In the end, it will only encourage rampant piracy.

Personally, they'll have my copy of Win2k when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I dunno... that article compared it to Media Center version of XP (which I'm actually using on a home built box). I think there are only a handful of OEM's that offer these... is the OEM software easily available?

Basically, it would limit the 64bit OS to a handful of vendors...

AMD was ready to pounce when M$ announced that they were going to delay their 64bit OS. Intel wasn't ready and AMD had released the Opteron. M$'s slowness to market really hurt an advantage AMD had by being first to market with a 64bit X86 processor.

This would stall AMD even more.

I really can't see this happening though. I can somewhat understand the media center software being OEM because M$ requires certain hardware companants. There's not a whole lot for them to require with the 64bit OS besides a 64bit processor and compatible chipset..... unless it's actually hardware specific?!?!?!?!?!

so, does this mean that we'll have to steal it from the manufacturers, like run over to dell and hold the place up to get a copy of one?

if thats what it takes, hell, i'd do it

wasnt media center OEM only? i can download that too, but i choose not to because i dont need it.

im with oni here. they can have my win2k when hell freezes over, and i would be happy to hand it over. until then, i will be enjoying the second best version of windows ever (behind nt4, i still use that on several computers). then again, i might not even use windows when i get an opteron finally.
