Hey

does anyone know where i can find some info about software used in wireless LANs? What should i look at while choosing software that will be suitable for WLAN etc ?

cheers

What do you mean about software? A GUI program or what? We need a bit more information on what you're looking for.

yes GUI, something that will test my hardware, as well as help with configuration and setup, monitoring traffic etc.

Ps. I dont know much about wireless networks and have to write an assignment about software used in WLANs. so yeah, i guess that software that does things above will do.

Your wireless card will come with the utilities for measuring signal strength, packet loss, etc.

Beyond that, the wireless router will have a few monitoring utilities built in to it, such as number of devices connected and transfer rates for each device.

Well, your wireless card will definitely come with drivers. Your WLAN may or may not come with bundled software. The usual way to access the settings for WLAN is by using its IP in a browser (it uses the http protocol).

I think he's asking about signal strengths and the like, which you will not be able to get from the router, as it radiates the signal in all directions with as much power as it's able to, unless you have it throttled down (i.e. one antenna off). Pretty much all wireless cards today come with more than just drivers. My Orinoco Gold came with a utility that displays a bar graph of the signal strength in my system tray. I know most of 3Com's products do this too. They aren't like ethernet cards are now, where they just come bundled with generic drivers for a Realtek 8029.
