i don't know what happened, but my computer won't shut down..it simply restarts...wierd thing is, im sure it's not windows, cuz i formatted, removing win 98 (when it started giving me problems) and installed 2000. and the problem is still there..to shut down i have to hold the power button down for 4 seconds and it shuts down, but i get scandisk every time. grrrrrrrr what's wrong??? im sure it's in the bios..but i don't think i've changed anything there recently...also, when i formatted, i trasnfered all my songs to another hard drive, which was set to slave...Now, i can't set the old drive to slave, i get some blue screen error on startup, something about not able to boot from disk, etc...is it because the slave has win 98 and the master has 2000 w ntfs????

Are you overclocked? Does the problem occur at stock speeds? Is ACPI enabled in the BIOS?

btw read this: http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58341
(your sig is too long)

file systems shouldn't matter... i know they don't with XP and thats about the same as 2k. set "optimized defaults" in the bios and see if that helps.. could it be your button? don't know about those things, but my power button restarts if you don't press it quick enough.. try that. on quick jab with your finger should do it!! :) :D

This is a know problem in win98. Go to ms knowledge base and search on shutdown. There is some issue with fast shutdown and power management (if I recall correctly). Good luck.

are you running an antivirus program and win98 if you are 99% that is your problem, basically it breaks down like this windows wants to shutdown all programs when your powering down, but antivirus software is designed so that other software cant shut it down (like a virus) so the two bump heads and the computer takes a crap, it used to happen to me in win 98 and its a known issue just like the BSOD's, there are some things you can do to fix this but i dont know them off the top of my head try your antivirus software webpage or microsoft's knowledgebase

i run a virus scanner all the time, i never have a problem with that, and ive had win95, 98, win2k, and now winxp....my guess is you have the power switch and reset messed up on your mobo...so check the manual, and make sure thats right....and make sure in bios, that you have it set that the power button turns off the computer...cause in most bios' you can change what it does...check that first, then check your mobo settings....hope you have the manual
