Would love some opinions on adding more RAM

Right now I have 4GB of OCZ Gold DDR3-12800. However, one of the stick is tested with error in memtest and I'm waiting for RMAin' it so I'm sitting @ 2Gb now.

I'm thinking maybe buying some Corsair XM3 RAM with similar timing and freq. But then I will have a 8Gb computer when my RAM returns.

I am wondering if it's a good idea at all. I usually play FSX and do school stuff. I also run Win 7 x64 and XP x86 dual boot.

Thanks!

Its not needed really, i don't remember how much ram fsx uses but it can't be more than 4. If your gonna do some big 3d modeling and stuff meybe but 4 gigs should be good enough for anything you would need to do. im still goin strong on my 2 gigs haha.

I find that with 8-12GB of memory, you can disable the page file which just makes Windows feel snappier in day to day apps. Unless you're using an SSD hard drive, it does seem to help with more memory. I wish it was as cut and dry as just measuring memory usage, and saying, you don't need more 2-4GB, but once you have 8-12GB and disable the page file, you'll never go back to less memory.

The reason I'm thinking about adding more memories is that in case 1 of the stick goes out, I still have enough memories to do stuffs.

Like I said right now 1 of my 2G stick is off for RMA and I'm stuck with only 2G right now. It just seems really really insuffient...

Well, if you multi-task like I do, you'll find that more memory makes your computer feel much snappier. I often have uTorrent running in the background which can eat a lot of memory when you have multiple torrents running. Sometimes I'm doing video encoding and or DVD burning at the same time. With my old C2D E8400 DDR2 setup, 4GB was barely tolerable, but 8GB worked great. With my Core i7 DDR3 setup, I tried 6GB but Windows felt sluggish at times when I had multiple apps running. Since changing to 12GB all is well again. No matter how many apps I have running now, Windows is still very responsive.

dam memory is insane now .. 12gb's lol ... i never thought id see the day when we'd need that much ..

im scared to build a new pc now .. not the actual build but price :chair:

I am currently running a Q6600 w/8GB of ram. I have a E5200 with 2GB of ram.

For even the simplest of internet/hulu/MS Office, the Dualie with 2 GB seems like a snail compared to my Q6600. Now... maybe the fact that the dualie is only at 3.0 Ghz and the Q6600 is at 3.6, but I hardly think that the 600 Mhz is the only factor.

I just ordered an i5 Set-up and was going to go with 4 GB of Ripjaw 1600, but at the current deal on the Egg I said "I have been using 8 and its great, so I just put in an order for another 4".

As stated above, I use my PC for my HTPC as well and I am constantly downloading torrents and watching HULU and having the virus scan in the background. I surf and open other apps. while I am doing the HULU and Torrents, so the extra memory comes in handy.

8 Gigs memory is the new 2!

Since the upgrade from XP (Where we were limited to 3) we somehow skipped 4 GB and honestly Aero is a memory hog. Might as well fill up those unused slots.

Oh.... and X.Barton, the price is really not THAT bad. Yesterday I was watching a re-run of "Sliders" the television pilot. She was telling a guy he was going to have to pay $20,000 for the MX 480 but when the MX 680s comes out she could charge $50,000. I was like WATAF!

And this was my First Computer! http://oldcomputers.net/trs80ii.html
