I can't believe it but I found a LCD I have just fell in love with. The Samsung 931BW from Best Buy for $130 today.

Reason why? I've always been about a 1:1 k/d ratio player in CSS, not really that good. But today, playing against the same guys I always do, I have a 3:1 ratio. Almost every shot is a headshot it seems. I'm sniping guys from clear across the map with a M4... Nothing has changed but the monitor! And I'm running it at only 60hz instead of 75hz, and using the analog cable. My CRT ran at 85hz.

How is this happening?

Point of the story, as a die hard CRT lover, I highly reccommend this screen!

hz dont matter with LCD's :D

It does if you have vsync on. I haven't turned it on yet because I haven't noticed any tearing. But the idea of being locked at 60 fps is not appealing.

Samsung has some good screens. Don't they make the Dell monitors? Dell just slaps the silkscreen on the front.

I also used to be a CRT lover. Until I got a gander at a good screen. I found a good deal on a so so monitor. Then I started to use it, and found out it was a pretty good unit. Now using my old CRT is not the same.
In Windwos or other OS enviroments. You don't worry as much about the 60Hz you have. Until you have to sync it like you mentioned. My LCD tops out about 75Hz, which is fine I guess. Even at 60Hz there is no flicker. I think the Samsung 931BW also tops out at 75Hz. So grab a driver and check it out to make sure the 60Hz is not the limit. Just in case you find a game you do have to lock the sync. Hey it's a possible 15fps.

Well I've noticed two things that bug me a little. The power supply makes a buzz that is annoying in a quiet room. It's much louder than my PC too...

And, the color is no match for the old CRT. Just doesn't have the warm feeling.

There's no point in generating more then 60fps if your screen can only display 60fps.

Alright, as a long-time CRT user who is hopefully eyeballing the newer LCD, you gotta give us more info! :D What do you think made the improvment? Have you gone from some dinky 17" CRT to a 19" LCD that makes things as large as life? Or has your son simply installed a hack for CS? ;)

I believe it's much more than just "slapping the silkscreen on."

I think they both source their panels from the same company.

Sort of like how Toyota and Lexus source their engines from the same place. :)

Lexus IS Toyota........

They are a luxury Toyota brand.

@ everyone else, LCD's DON'T HAVE REFRESH RATES! Ok, technically they do, but its on a per pixel basis. Each pixel "refreshes" individually. Because of this, there is no refresh rate in the sense that CRT's have. They support input signals from analog inputs, meaning they have to cope with a refresh rate, which will limit FPS in vsync, as the idea of that is not to produce more frames than a CRT monitor can actually display because its "a waste". anyway, i still user 2x CRT monitors. I see too much ghosting in LCD's to want one. plus the is some awesome monitor technology in the works.

p.s i use an LCD at work, and its great for such things, but not games

If I had to judge based on the LCDs at work, I'd stick with my CRT. But since I know what kind of cheap and/or old crap corporate budgets buy, I'm pretty much disregarding work experiance. ;) Don't put to much stock in work items. The only possible exception being the IT department head's stuff.

small company, we buy Dell, which are the best LCD's I've seen.
Dell does not make their own monitors. They source from three manufactures.

Samsung bieng the largest. Most of the 19" are Samsung. The larger units (24") can be both Samsung and BenQ.

Some of the panels are made by LG.

Unless it is cheaper to buy Dell. Just buy the brand that made the panel in the first place. :D

A common Dell display:

Yes, but this display is capable of 75 FPS and I really want those extra 15 FPS.

I can't explain the improvement. My CRT was (is, I'm not getting rid of it!) a 22" NEC. And nobody uses my PC besides me, I've made sure it is well locked out.

I couldn't use LCDs before this either because of the ghosting. I tried a 2005FPW, the 21" Gateway, and a 19" 5ms Hanns-G. The Dell was useless, the Gateway was slightly better and the color was phenomenal, and the Hanns-G had minor ghosting that wasn't too bad but the color was horrible. Now I'm finally happy with this 2ms Samsung, I have to look really hard to see any ghosting.

LCDs are no better then crts for games. The only reason why i got an LCD was because I would rather take a 10 pound lcd to a lan then a 35 pound crt.

Exactly. There is no reason a LCD should do better there's just too much stacked against it. But yet it's happening for me  And yeah, I bought this for the same reason you bought yours, very light. And my CRT must have been 40-50 lbs and barely fit in my car.

Downgrading in screen size will increase your kills, because you have a better overview of the entire screen in the point of focus of your eyes. Try a 15" CRT and you'll be praising the heavens. Same for a LCD.

Also I continue to laugh at those who think any FPS in game above the refresh rate of a monitor doesn't count, when in reality IT DOES on a level of feel of the game & registration of your input. It very well may LOOK the same... but it will not FEEL the same and the game doesn't PROCESS the same.

I dont think its fair for you guys to be comparing cheapo low end TN / MVA / PVA LCD's to high end CRTs for a real comparison look at an S-IPS panel vs a CRT.

I bought this monitor the 931BW, its pretty nice. Infact I wanted to buy 2, but they were out when I went back for the 2nd. oh well, In comparison with the 2005fpw I have next to it. the 2005fpw has better color and a larger viewing angle. dispite this I would have used the 2x 931BWs as my primary monitors and put the 2005fpw on my test machine....
