well, ive decided to go all out and get one of the top of the line cards, but the question remains: which? I have a 550w PSU, so that wont be an issue. I just cant decide between the x800 xt and the 6800 ultra. Between those two, which do you guys think is the better choice?

Having followed the benchmark wars when they were hot a little while ago, I would go with the X800XT. I chose the X800Pro myself, because I didn't wanna spend the extra money.

XT. It usually beat the Ultra by a fair ammount, and unless you're planning on not upgrading your video card for a quite long time, the lack of PS3 support shouldn't matter.

The point to be made here is that they are both just so damn close that any arguments for either one are totally subjective. The benchmarks have em all neck in neck; they are both amazing performers. What are you looking for in particular? If the eyecandy is a major concern, the ATi may be a better choice. The nVidia holds its own in many situations too, though.

What ever comes out 1st...Hehehehe I have the XT on order but that was only because I thought it would be out and easier to get than the 6800 but it appears that I can't get either right now... :(

I am getting the x800xt as soon as it ships. A) Cheaper B)Performance C) I trust ATI more D)The x800xt is supporting current standards better

Just my 2cents

The reviews have them neck and neck, but I think with driver updates and ps3 support, the 6800 will pull ahead over time. Most reviews also put a lot of the benchmarking back on CPU performance which has got me thinking AMD 64 bit upgrade. Thye both seem to be vaporware for the most part. I ordered a 6800 ultra 2 weeks ago from PNY and it's still back ordered. eVGA's site says no stock until the first of July, and NewEgg must get 2 or 3 in at time because they'll pop up briefly, albeit severely overpriced, but mostly out of stock. I haven't followed the x800's as close but haven't seen them available anywhere either in abundance, if at all.
So my vote, 6800 ultra.

I've always wondered exactly what gives this impression to people. Both companies have proven their abilities with drivers and that they both can get decent performance jumps from updates, so I wonder, what makes one think that one company will squeeze out driver performance and the other wont, though both have shown they are very capable of doing it?

(just a side note: this is not directed towards any one side, or a fanboy remark, but to both sides)

I think the belief came from the fact that ATI was using a basicly updated architecture where the 6800 was totally new, so NV would pull some tricks out of their rectums. This may or may not be the case. Like its been said you cant really lose with either of them. They will both play the current and future games and PS 3 isnt out to test yet so flip a coin.

woah u guys are missing the point, i would have to say, that it depends on your system!

x800XT=Work Best and Performce Better With Amd CPus

6800=Work Best and Performce Better with Intel Cpus

Never seen this before, do you have some info i could read into?

Currently have an AMD and im in the market for a new vid card, anything to make the decision easier, y'know?

I was leaning towards the ATI x800XT but now that I read about NVIDIA's Scalable Link Interface I think I will go with Nvidia's 6800 ultra or the GT so I can do SLI in the future. I'm an ATI fan, but I really liked the old 3dfx Voodoo 2's back in the day and I'd like to see this again.

Note: This is only on the PCI-Express, so if you want an AGP card then it's a toss up.
