How well does the x850XT PE AGP card respond to changing the bus speed? I just upgraded from a 9800xt that I was running an 80mhz AGP bus with. However Ive had other cards that wouldnt work if there was a 1mhz change in bus speed. I can lock the bus with the mobo, but I noticed with the 9800xt it was performing better at 80mhz then 66mhz. What are other owners running for a bus speed? I just wanted to get a base idea before I started to tweak it.

From what I've tested so far, it absolutely will not run at 80MHz AGP. Perhaps a little lower, but unfortunately I think its safe to say that this card hates anything much above 66MHz. :(

Hmm...Thats a little dissapointing. Good thing I can lock the bus though.

Slow down there partner.

You shouldn't be overclocking your AGP bus.

That should be locked at 66 or 67 for those that mboard lock at that mhz.

Normally I do leave it alone at 66mhz, but my mobo will let me go up to 100mhz. I was testing it one day, and I noticed better performance at the higher bus. When I hit 80 I decided to stop, even though I didnt notice any errors.

Are you being honest with yourself or are you just assuming.

I've upped the bus speed before as well and noticed no increase in FPS or 3dmark score but noticed more tearing and artifacts as well as read stories of guys messing up their cards messing with this setting.

IMO your feeling the "honda" effect.

The honda effect is when guys stick a muffler or an air filter on the car and the box says they can get up to "20 HP". In the end they gain like 1 or 2 hp but they're so excited about their purchase, the butt dyno registers 20hp and now they think they just shaved off 5 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

So, have you done any actual benchmarks after adjusting this setting or are you using your "butt dyno" to come to this conclusion?

I fully know what you mean by the "honda" effect. Im into cars as well as computers.
I have run benchmarks to back it up. Ive used ATi Tools to scan for artifacts, and it will run fine. I wasnt just assuming or thinking it ran better. For a while this system was my "testing" system that I would just mess with, and I ran A LOT of benchmarks with different settings. But I did see an increase with benchmarks as I increased the bus speed.

How much of a change are we talking about? A few points? A few hundred points?

Because the risk is rather large. And it's probably not worth it for just a few points.

I dont remember how much of an increase I got. I did the testing a while ago. Ill just keep the x850 at a 66mhz bus I guess.

Actually I got very nice gains with my X800s at about 80MHz. A lot of pro benchmarkers would definitely agree that an increased AGP bus is a good thing. It's not any more dangerous to raise it than it is to raise any other clock.

The X850XT seems quite stable at 68MHz and high clocks, so I think there's room for more. Don't be afraid to push it a little. :)

Aside from benchmarking is it really safe to keep it up for general use? I've heard many accounts of this burning out the card.

When I over-clocked my agp past 67 with my 850xt I found it to me quite unstable with core/mem overclocks at the level I could achieve with a 66 bus and it usally preformed worse mhz for mhz
editied for P.C. points
