I'm going to wager that nobody will ever get the xbox 360 to run unsigned code if even half of the protection features that are thought to exist actually do. As for piracy the simplest way would to get discs that are identical to the x360 discs, I realize they are just dvds but obviously any old dvd+r isn't going to work.

Sorry but your are dreaming - they can make it they can break it, they always do - find me ONE form of protection on Consoles / PC software that to date has not been cracked........

well i made a cloneCD (exact copy) of my 2k4 play disc, and it still detects it as a copied CD and wont run, so my guess is, yes, it will know if its authentic or not

I'm guessing it's because the digital signature was not copied as well. I don't have a 360, but I heard that all the software is digitally signed for verification.

How about the Gamecube discs? I've never seen those. I was gonna say Nintendo cartriges, but I've seen tons of pirated gameboy games...

there was a lot of piracy for the gamecube, basically you streamed games into the system from your computer via a hole in phantasy star online. a lot of them wouldn't work, though.

If a lot of games didn't work, I wouldn't exactly call that a lot of piracy. :eh?:

Dont forget who made the Xbox...

Microsoft.. and we ALL know they cant secure their products for crap

Next you'll be telling me that Firefox can. Has it dawned on you that the reason why Microsoft's products always seem to have security holes in them is because they are used on 98% of the world's PC's? When you have that kind of global domination and usage, its natural that you are going to be a HUGE target for hackers because hackers don't want to affect something that no one will notice, they want to be seen by as many people as possible. No software is 100% secure, none. Its simply a matter of how many talented people you have trying to hack it.

I've made full backups of both Perfect Dark Zero and Call of Duty 2 (the only games I own for the 360 right now) and the only thing that stops you from burning them to dvd and playing them is the media flag check which determines what type of media the disk is (ie if it's a DVD-ROM or a DVD+/-R).

Yep, and that's a BIG step to overcome with the new 360 security.

the rule is (and its a very simple one) if somebody makes it somebody else can (and most probably will) crack it eventually.

its only a matter of time.

I wouldn't argue that fact. The bottom line though is that its still a good ways away.

Where cracked and hacked and you can download the games :)

Not suprised at this, I mean no software is crack proof, its basically impossible. Though this may not be a full fledge crack it is compromising the encryption a decent amount. Seems this is a good first step, be interesting to see where it goes from here. Though it is not like people will be emulating these games on their PCs this could eventually lead to the old copy games to the hdd and play withot disk type deal.

bear in mind though emulating xbox games was meant to be real easy, and er... they basically still haven't done it (other than halo at terrible frame rates). i think it might be quite a long while before 360 games are.

everything is hackable. everything. from the day videogames came out they have been piratable. they will continue to be. i dont support this, but its just a simple truth. a modchip can over-ride any hardware security that is in place because it is a hardware over ride. you people that think it is hack proof really dont understand. it will be hacked, you will be able to play backups, run linux, and more. the day will come. mark my words.

Eh, I really don't care if it is never hacked. It looks like MS was smart enough to protect its system pretty well this time around. With so much Live capability, having one modded would almost be a waste. Besides I would want to be able to send SMS messages from the 360. :p
