I currently have the AthlonXP 1700+. I have it running at 9.5 x 225MHz (2.14GHz) and I love it! I now have an opportunity to get a Barton 2500+, but I don't know if the Barton is locked or not.

My question is simple: is the upgrade worth it or should I sit tight until I do a *FULL* upgrade to Athlon 64?

I'd stick with that XP1700. More than likely, the Barton you get will be locked. That just means that your only gonna be able to up that FSB and not be able to touch the Multis. I would stick with the XP1700.

Makes sense to me - thanks!

Maybe I will spend the $$$$ on some new RAM and another HDD - damn I have a crapload of mp3's!

With good cooling and power supply on a new locked CPU, you run the possibility of hitting 2500mhz+.

Think about it. You know you can run at 220FSB at least. That alone is 2530mhz. So it's not like the FSB will be limiting you.

But I think the hard drive and RAM may be better buys for you. They'll affect your computing experience much more than a little more CPU speed.
