XP Welcome Screen w/ Email Notification

I am un-able to clear the email notification on the welcome screen.
(you have x-# email and x-# programs running)
Currently it say's that I have 10 emails. (I don't) This is P***ing me off. I use Outlook Express hooked to Hotmail. I have cleared all messages and cleared the deleted folders also, and refreshed the screens.
I am lost. Can anybody give me some idea's on how to clear this?
I did a search and looked through 20 pages without any info on the subject that I could use.

If you download the Powertoys Tweak UI will give you clear it.

start Tweak UI
IN Repair choose Repair Unread Mail count
click repair now
