Wanted to find someone who has experience with (or can point me to a website as such) with dismantling the subwoofer / amp box on the Z640 speakers.

I removed the ~10 screws that hold the metal facia plate onto the rear of the sub enclosure, and was only able to pry just far enough to get a tiny LED penlight through. It seems the AC cord, or else the actual sub leads from the amp are keeping the facia from coming up any further (ziptied down?)

There's actually nothing wrong with the speakers or the amp, but I want to have a look at how the sub box is designed and what driver they're using. I was able to "rebuild" my little cheap home-theater Sony tower speakers (those old-school 5' tall 7" wide towers to go next to your TV) by judicious use of dynomat, plugging one port and changing the length of another and using a better driver. I picked up an incredible amount of <30hz response and got rid of a lot of the 150->250hz buzz.

This sub is better than the ones in my Sony towers, but could still use some TLC :)

youll be surprized to find it is only a 6' driver with a passive radiator... my brother took his apart I'll send him a link and see if he can help you out.

First you have to pry the grill off the front of the enclosure, under the grill you will find 4 screws holding the 8" passive radiator in. After you have removed the passive radiator you will see the 6.5" driver, remove the 4 screws for the driver and unhook the terminals, once all that has been done you will need to cut a ziptie from there and then you will be able to remove the amp from the rear on the enclosure. Hope that helps ya. Good Luck.

Ahh!! Ok, sounds easy! I saw the screws in the front, but wasn't sure if the silver "surround" came off with the grill or the grill itself came out. I'll have another hack at it later today or tomorrow.

So it's a 6.5" driver or a 6" driver? 6.5" would be easier, I've got a few options for replacement that way ;)
