Very quiet power supply – Joe
SUMMARY: An OK unit for modest power applications.

The good guys at the HEC Group were nice enough to send a sample of their HEC-350TW-TX Power Supply to try out, a 350 watt unit.
Key Features:
- Connectors: One SATA HD, one Intel P4, six HD, two floppy and one 24 pin connector (you will need an adaptor for 20 pin connectors)
- MTBF Above 100,000 Hours at 25ºC
- Silent Technology – <32dB At 80% Load
- EMI < 3dB
- One 120 mm fan
- Intel 1.3V compliant
Specs:

One thing I liked about this power supply is the 120 mm fan – quiet and moves a fair amount of cooling air:

A closer look at the heatsinks shows an interesting design:

Very simple yet quite effective.
To try it out, I hooked it up to a P4 motherboard and recorded voltages and temps at idle and under stress (running Prime95):
Rail | Idle Voltages | Stress Voltages |
12 Volt | 11.92-98 | 11.86-92 |
5 Volt | 4.89 | 4.84-87 |
3.3 Volt | 3.28-30 | 3.26-28 |
Under stress, I measured temps at the fan’s intake and at the exit of the power supply as follows:
Intake Temp | Exit Temp | Delta |
21.3ºC | 21.7ºC | 0.4ºC |
Fan noise was quite low and the temps were very reasonable – not a lot of heat coming from this unit. However, voltages did dip somewhat and all lines were a tad under their rated levels (using MBM).
Overall, the HEC-350TW-TX Power Supply appears to be a reasonable unit for modest power demand applications; the 120 mm fan is a plus for noise and cooling.
Thanks again to the HEC Group for sending this our way.
