hokiealumnus Benching Live April 23rd

Overclockers writer and Benching Team member hokiealumnus (HWBot profileauthor profile) , will be benching sub-zero live tonight! (Preformatted, sorry; I don’t have a habit of talking in third-person.)

Tune in to Overclockers Live! at 8:00 p.m. EST (plus or minus 15 minutes) for some overclocking with dry ice (DICE). Here’s the low-down:

  • Mobo: EVGA P55 FTW
  • CPU: Intel i7 870
  • RAM: 2 x 2GB G.Skill Pi DDR3-2400, 9-11-9-28
  • GPU: MSI X1550 (to have something on screen – 3D is best benched on Sandy Bridge or a Gulftown chip)
  • Cooling: Dry ice on the CPU
  • Focus: Anything 2D – trying to tie/beat DICE results on the bot.
  • Click here to watch on Overclockers Live!
  • Date & Time: April 23, 2011, around 8:00 p.m. EST (potentially earlier; will update if that’s the case)
    • Benching will wind down whenever the DICE runs out, probably about four hours from when it begins.

I was preparing the hardware last night, so there should be little (if any) prep required this evening. Hope you can stop by and say hi!

Just got home with 17lbs of dice. Should be enough for aq decent night of benching. Probably be live around six to for finishing setup and such.

...and I'm live. Not doing much, just preparing to finish insulating. Benching will begin when I'm done. :)

So why exactly was it a fail? I know you volt modded it, but not sure why. Also everytime I walked in (fam over all night) you were in the bios or messing with the board. Didn't see any actual benching. So what happened? Did you use all the dice? I know I buy 12 lbs and use it for a few hours a day, then again I'm benching a notebook on dice, and only a few hours a day due to time constraints.

I modded it trying to defeat a cold bug. See: http://kingpincooling.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361

Unfortunately it just plain didn't work. Same problems as before - b6 POST code continuously with any sort of voltage applied to CPU. Of course, without the ability to give any voltage, you have zero ability overclocking, so that was that.

Now I'm benching sandy bridge at 5.4 ghz with a newly flashed GTX580. :)
