AMD pricing has taken a plunge and the pricing differential between its products and Intel’s is now about the
same as it was in the late Thunderbird days.
(All pricing low OEM price from Pricewatch)
Processor Speed/PR Rating | Intel Processor | AMD Processor | Difference |
2.0GHz/2000+ | $349 | $246 | 30% |
1.9GHz/1900+ | $245 | $182 | 26% |
1.8GHz/1800+ | $194 | $126 | 35% |
1.7GHz/1700+ | $167 | $102 | 39% |
1.6GHz/1600+ | $155 | $99 | 36% |
1.5GHz/1500+ | $133 | $95 | 24% |
This is significantly different than it was just a little over two weeks ago (data from JC News.)
Processor Speed/PR Rating | Intel Processor | AMD Processor | Difference |
2.0GHz/2000+ | $380 | $336 | 12% |
1.9GHz/1900+ | $258 | $233 | 10% |
1.8GHz/1800+ | $213 | $171 | 20% |
1.7GHz/1700+ | $179 | $131 | 27% |
1.6GHz/1600+ | $149 | $115 | 23% |
1.5GHz/1500+ | $136 | $110 | 19% |
You might say “well, Intel hasn’t cut its prices yet,” but Intel’s prices on Pricewatch appear to have settled in right around “offical pricing.” (“Official pricing” from
the Inquirer).
Processor | “Official” Price: 1/28/02 | Low Pricewatch Price: 1/24/02 | Difference |
2.0GHz Socket 478 | $342 | $349 | +2% |
1.9GHz Socket 478 | $241 | $245 | +2% |
1.8GHz Socket 478 | $193 | $194 | +1% |
1.7GHz Socket 478 | $163 | $167 | +2% |
1.6GHz Socket 478 | $133 | $155 | +18% |
1.5GHz Socket 478 | $133 | $133 | — |
Meanwhile, AMD’s current pricing is already well below what will be “official pricing.” (Numbers, again, from the Inquirer).
Processor | “Official” Price: 1/28/02 | Low Pricewatch Price: 1/24/02 | Difference |
XP2000+ | $280 | $246 | -12% |
XP1900+ | $230 | $182 | -21% |
XP1800+ | $166 | $126 | -20% |
XP1700+ | $130 | $102 | -21% |
Now it is possible we’ll see Intel prices go clunk next week, though Intel’s prices usually (but not always) hover around official pricing.
However, when AMD starts severely undercutting its official pricing, that has been a good indicator in the past that
it is having problems selling. There isn’t a new processor expected from AMD, so it’s not a matter of everything just
going down a notch, either.
