What lies underneath the metal cap. — Julina Stenning.
I’m the owner of a dead Pentium 4. Just out of interest, I’ve prised off the tin cap to see what was underneath:
Having opened it up, I’ve got mixed feelings. On the one hand, it looks nice and does a great job of protecting the die; on the other hand, it is something else between the heat source and the heatsink/waterblock. It may not be clear in the photos, but the inside of the cap is very rough and the thermal paste is thick and inconsistent.
