SUMMARY: A very nice package, although three fans is a bit of overkill.

Laptop Cooler

The good guys at Kingwin sent us a sample of their Ultra Cool Laptop Cooler (#UC3) to check out. Laptop coolers are increasingly coming in handy, especially for laptops using desktop Pentium CPUs – very hot!

Key Features:

  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • Four dedicated front memory card slots supporting: Compact Flash I,II, IBM micro drive, Smart Media card, Secure Digital card, Multi-card, memory stick, MS pro cards, MS duo (an adapter needed), MS pro duo and MS ROM format
  • Three 60 mm fans, variable control 1800 – 2800 rpm
  • Size: 325 x 263 x 28mm
  • On-Off Switch, Variable fan control wheel
  • International power adapter (100 to 240v)
  • USB Cable

This is a very handy cooler, as it houses front slots for reading memory cards:

I use a reader all the time for work on images, so having a laptop cooler with the slots integrated into the front is very handy. The USB cable hooks up to the laptop and that’s it – the memory card slots and the USB ports are activated; there’s a driver disk if you’re still running W98, otherwise it’s plug-and-play.

The cooler does not sit up on legs, as most others I have seen. The sides are open for fan airflow:

In addition, this cooler is different than others I have seen in that it has three 60 mm fans:

All the others I have tried out use two fans. Looking at this arrangement, I’m struck by its “unbalanced” nature – why two fans to the right? Why not four fans running very slowly? Or just two fans? Maybe it’s just me…

The back shows the three USB ports in the middle and the USB and power connections to the right:

Overall, a neat package.

In use, I found the three fans, even at the lowest setting, a tad on the busy side – not loud, but just noticeable; I think disconnecting the third fan might not be a bad move – just enough to cut down the “busy-ness” without seriously compromising cooling performance.

CONCLUSIONS

A very nice package, although three fans is a bit of overkill. Disconnect one and I think this is a very handy laptop cooler for those who routinely need a memory card reader.

Thanks again to Kingwin for sending this our way to try out.
