The mouse is one of the simplest input devices for your PC and has been around for many years. But with gaming becoming a hobby and even a career for some, the mouse has been rapidly evolving to suit these needs. One such evolution is Logitech’s G5 mouse, in this case the BF2142 special edition. This mouse might just be the ultimate gaming input device, so let’s get right into the review!
As you can see the packaging is very effective, as is with most Logitech products. The mouse itself can be seen through a clear plastic bubble on the box. You can also see what makes the BF2142 special edition different from its plain G5 brother. It has a large BF2142 graphic across the top of the mouse.

It looks like Mac and Linux users are out of luck.
Once out of the packaging you can get a better look at the various pieces that come with the G5. Notice that the front of the tin says Logitech G5 on it.
The BF2142 graphic on the top of the mouse looks really cool.
On the bottom of the mouse is the gaming-grade laser, weight cartridge slot and three grey Polytetrafluoroethylene feet.

I’ll compare some of the G5 features to those of my old MX700.
On top of the G5 are the DPI+ DPI- buttons, plus a DPI indicator, and a scroll wheel that does both up and down and side to side scrolling.
The G5 has no forward button, only a back button. While the two mice are very similar as far as shape is concerned…
The bottoms of the mice are very different – the G5 is just a bit bigger than the MX700 and you can see how huge the G5’s feet are compared to the MX700’s.
The scroll wheel sticks up quite a bit more on the G5 than on the MX700.
The G5’s cord is sleeved and it covers the entire cable all the way into the mouse! Bravo Logitech!

The G5 comes with Logitech’s Setpoint software on the included CD which allows you to easily configure the mouse’s settings…
Including making changes to the mouse’s 3 DPI settings.
I found the gaming on the G5 was a very enjoyable experience. The extra DPI was greatly appreciated in games like CS:S where I had my sensitivity maxed with the MX700 and that was still not enough for me. The variable DPI system was also really great for sniping in FPS games (especially BF2142 🙂 ).
The mouse’s large smooth feet allowed it to glide across my desk as if on ice. The weight system was a neat feature, but I chose to run with no weights in mine. The mouse was very comfortable to use and thanks to the textured material on the mouse’s sides, I never lost my grip on it.
I also liked the larger scroll wheel and the DPI+/- buttons were very well placed (compared with the MX518). The only thing I didn’t like was that Logitech included a back button but no forward button, forcing me to go all the way to the top of my Firefox browser to click the forward button (the horror!). Anyway, I’ll get straight to the Pros/Cons:
PROS:

- Variable DPI
- Gaming grade laser!
- Variable weight system!
- Just the right size
- VERY low friction feet
- Sleeved cord
- Great packaging
CONS:
- Not for left handed users
The G5 BF2142 edition is by far the best mouse I have ever used. It has a wealth of high performance features and an awesome look. Overall I recommend this mouse to any right-hand mouser who is in the market for a new mouse – you will not be disappointed!
