Not Quite Ready For Primetime . . .

Planet3DNow has an update on upcoming 65nm AMD chips.

While the top speed to be released is a little better than previously reported, the “fastest” 65nm chip will still be only 2.6GHz, and AMD still plans to put out 2.8 and 3.0 90nm chips to make it look like they’re still competing.

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, you don’t do this if your 65nm process is working fine.

In any event, for Doubting Thomases, the chips are supposed to be out in December, and the lowest speed one should be sub-$200.

They’ll be tested, and if they don’t match what the Conroes have been doing, well, the E4300 will be out in January. I doubt they will.

In closing, I find it rather bizarre that AMD keeps telling us how great and advanced their manufacturing capabilities are, and it seemingly can do everything
except make 65nm CPUs competitive with Intel’s.
