Today, I am taking a look at Thermalright’s new offering for the quiet computing crowd, the HR-02. There are many people out there that have to live very close to their computers and noise does bother some people. So Thermalright has stepped up to the plate and has given us an updated offering that can be used totally fanless.
After reviewing the H50 and H70 low cost liquid cooling solutions that Corsair is selling, I became curious about how well their other cooling solutions perform. Besides the above mentioned units, Corsair is also selling the A50 and A70 tower style heat sinks. The A50 seems to be budgeted at the lower end of the premium cooling scene and the A70 looks like it is being marketed more at the high end scene, in competition with the likes of Thermalright, Prolimatech and Noctua.
Ever need a heatsink to cool that power hungry beast of yours? Is the stock cooling horrible and your GPU is without any good after market solutions? If so, then improvise. Jury rig that incompatible GPU cooler, find an unused CPU cooler you have tucked away, or even go all out and buy a CPU cooler for your GPU if there are no GPU specific solutions. No, I haven’t lost my mind. This is just what runs through the mind of a bencher who is trying to squeeze every last drop of performance out of his GPU, but has no budget for extreme cooling.
We have a GPU cooler here which has the “World’s First” moniker attached to its resumé, the Thermalright Shaman. The 8 heatpipes justify this moniker, and it has at least 2 more heatpipes than any other GPU air cooling solution out there. As time permitted over the past couple of weeks, I’ve used my GTX 460 1 GB to test the Shaman against Prolimatech’s MK-13 and eVGA’s “External Exhaust” stock cooler. Today, we take a closer look at the the heatsink itself and its performance.
Now, we have Corsair’s answer to the shortcomings of their original LCLC offering, which comes with a thicker radiator for more area to move heat from it and they have given this new solution a true push-pull dual fan setup for more airflow through the new, thicker radiator. Let’s see if this cooler can outmatch high end air cooling.
I have seen it talked about on the forums that the Corsair Hydro Series H50 low cost water cooling system is equal or better than high end air, with some heated discussions taking place at time from people arguing for or against that statement. So, since Corsair was kind enough to send us an H50 system for testing, I decided to see if the H50 can equal some of the best air cooling solutions on the market.
The Megahalems comes with no fans of its own. You can choose your own fans, but what fans do you get? How well do they cool your system? How loud are they? When I decided I wanted to cool a 4GHz Core i7 860 with a Megahalems, I figured I would test a few fans and see how well they did. Needless to say, I sort of got carried away. After using a performance/dollar CPU cooler for around a year, I decided it was time to dip into the “high-end” air cooling solutions. The Venomous X had recently entered the game and I found a good deal on it (free shipping reels me in), so I pulled the trigger. I went into detailed testing to see if my buy was worth the money. Founded in 2008 in Taipei Taiwan, Prolimatech is one of the newest players in the heat-sink business. Their first entry into the extremely competitive heatsink market was the immensely successful Megahalems CPU cooler. Easily one of the best performing air coolers on the market, the Megahalems stole the hearts of enthusiasts around the globe with decent availability, a very reasonable price, and excellent fit and finish and quality control.
So, after the success of their first entry, I was naturally very curious to see what Prolimatech had up their sleeve next. Enter the MK-13 VGA cooler, a massive cooler utilizing six 6mm heat-pipes, and a fairly universal mounting mechanism. Does this cooler have what it takes to continue the legacy of its CPU mounted sibling? We shall see.
