Today we will be reviewing the mighty R9 290x Lightning from MSI. Some of us may recall the outcome of the GTX 780 Lightning review wasn’t exactly what the enthusiast crowd wanted it to be with the imposed power limits that were in place. Now, to be fair, this was not MSI’s fault. That distinction is squarely on NVIDIA’s shoulders for their ‘green’ program. That aside, this is an AMD card and we will have no such limits! That has to be a good thing, right? We will dig down into the nitty gritty of this R9 290x and see what MSI has done to make it warrant the Lightning moniker, and how well it performs. Read More
AMD has had its new R2xx series GPUs out for a couple of months now. Although model with aftermarket cooling have been out for it, here at OCF we have not had a chance to review any of them. That is about to change! In my hands is MSI’s offering, the MSI R9 290 Gaming 4G, which sports the Twin Frozr IV cooler. In past iterations, this cooler has been effective and quiet. Get comfy because it is picture time. Read More
Well, we’d like to tell you we have a review today, but AMD says pre-launch samples were tight and was unable to procure one for us. They have iterated they will get us one post-launch though, so we’ll bring you a full review as soon as we’re able.
In addition to the fact that they were unable to seed one, we have it on good authority that multiple US offices of board partners (big ones) hadn’t even held one of these in their hands as of late last week. Partners aren’t sampling reference boards, only AMD is, so either supply is tight or AMD is controlling this launch just as tightly. This is, in fact, a hard launch – AMD expects immediate availability. There isn’t any information on supply amounts though. Hopefully they’ll have plenty. Time will tell. Read More
