Today we had a chance to look at another X299 offering, this time from ASRock with its X299 OC Formula. The OC Formula is more of the sports coupe of motherboards with a focus on overclocking and going fast as opposed to gaming or even workstation use. We put the monster i9-9980XE 18c/36t CPU on the board and push it as far as our cooling will take us along with going over the specifications and features.
In this review we will wrap up the “major” overclocking boards. We looked at the ASUS Maximus VIII Extreme and, more recently, the Gigabyte SOC Force. Both of which were pretty formidable motherboards in their own right. The last board is one of everyone’s favorites in the extreme overclocking community, the ASRock Z170 OC Formula. Like those mentioned above this board has, for generations, been noted by respected extreme overclockers as being one of the best for the job. Sadly, I won’t be using LN2 for this review, but we will beat on it none the less and come up with a good idea on how it stacks up anyway!
Several weeks ago, we looked at ASRock’s X99 Fatality board and it turned out to be a pretty solid board all around with good overclocking, a quality audio CODEC, board layout, and features. Now we will take a look at their ‘King of the Hill’ overclocking board in the X99 OC Formula. The OC Formula series from ASRock is one of the more highly regarded boards, particularly for extreme overclocking in that they generally come with higher end and more robust power delivery to support such endeavors. “But wait there’s more!” While the board might be aimed at that crowd, there are still plenty of features for the average Joe that makes this board appealing to most anyone. Take a read below as we go over the features and put the board through its paces.
ASRock announced that its flagship Z87 OC Formula motherboards will ship with an industry leading five years warranty. The new mainboard is built around the new Z87 chipset from Intel and is meant to support Haswell processors for socket 1150. Aimed at enthusiasts and overclockers, the board features hardware and software features to allow easy overclocking and stability, dual-stack MOSFETs, enhanced cooling and ASRock’s new waterproof conformal coating.
