I have just built a 2.4c with abit's ic7, 512 cosair pc2700, stock HSF, MSI Ti4200, and a WD120GIG. I went and OCed it to 3.0ghz, but then weird thing happened, onboard sound wouldnt work. So then i flashed the bios with the new 1.3, and then the onboard sound worked again. This is my first time Overclocking, so I dont know much about all the stuff, do you guys think i could go any higher with those 2700 and the stock HSF?? All the voltage are unchanged. I benchmarked using 3dmark2001SE, got a 12800~points the first try with 3.0GHZ, then i OCed the Ti4200 to 600/300Core and got a 14100~points. How much more points would the 9700 give me? Or any advice on how to improve the performace of my machine. Any feedback would be great.

You would be hitting over 17,000 in 3DMark 2001 out of the box, if i were to take a guess.

More important though, the 9700 would greatly improve your performance in actual games. Plus, it would allow you to turn on some aggressive anti-aliasing and anisotropic-filtering to really improve the image quality.

I sold my GeForce 4 TI4600 and bought a 9700 Pro when they first came out, and i have loved it ever since. The GF4 TI cards are great, but the 9700 and 9700 Pro are a big step up.

I plan on keeping my 9700 Pro until the next big players hit the scene (NV40 / R400). If you get the 9700 though, i don't think you will be dissappointed. Anyway, good luck.

Get a 9700, I just went from a Ti4200 to a 9700 man the IQ is soooooo much better!!! I have a non pro model and OC'ed as high as I could go without changing the cooling I got 18060 in 2k1.

Get the 9700 !

Newegg has a refurbished Sapphire 9700 (non pro) for $159 !!!

Grab it while you can .

and if you get a np you're just a bios flash away from a possible pro. there is a sticky on this in the ati section if you have interest in that.

Got to agree with the rest of the guys here, I'll be swapping my 4200 for a 9700 soon too. Might as well go with the non pro version and save some money they overclock differences in them is almost nill, so you should just push the non pro as far as it can go. You may not notice a difference in some games if you use really crappy graphics, but once you start cranking everything and start using AA watch the 4200 smoke and die while the 9700 blows it away.

oops ... forgot

Thanks for all the replies guys. Im up to 3.12Ghz now, unstable, probably need a better heatsink and some Cosair pc3500. Too bad the price for the Cosair just jumped up $14 for 512 in newegg.com. Now i need to save up some cash and get myself a 9700, sk900U, and some cosair pc3500. Preparing myself for the release of Half Life 2(whenever that is). What kind of fan should i get if i get the Sk900U heatsink??

Fan .....

Panaflo 92mm model # FBA09A12H1A
2850 RPM
56.8 CFM
35 DB NOISE

Damn, Stereo beat me to that suggestion. Basically any highflow fans will do you if you want some extreme air cooling. There's always a toss up between sound and speed though frankly if you're not going to be doing an extreme overclock getting a fan that powerful would be pointless and getting a medium flow fan would be much more suitable. If your using a case that lets sound out easily you may want to think about a different fan anything above 30dba is amazingly loud.

I would say a little differant on the db stuff .(IMO)

(basic noise in db)
32db and under is very quite .
32db to 35db is noticable but still relativly quite .
35db to 38 abit more noitcable but very liveable .
38db to 40 getting closer to loud .
40db on up is LOUD .

I currently use a 80mm Panaflo on my AX-478 its , 47/CFM , 3450/RPM =38db and its noticeable but not loud at all .

Iam however doing a 92mm Panaflo mod on my AX-478 this week with the same 92mm that I mentioned in the above post .

Panaflo 92mm model # FBA09A12H1A
2850 RPM
56.8 CFM
35 DB NOISE

This will give me more air flow (CFM) and abit lower noise .
Should make for an XINT combo !

Anyway thats my take on the noise thing ; and believe me I do lilke a pretty quite PC myself .

;) :D
