Need To Know

I have a 9700 pro, I have a 1U solid copper heatsinkw/fan i had to drill holes in the HS to get it to work right, + had to take off the shim w/exacto knife( i would never do that again)
QUESTION: Is there a better , or comperable cooler out there besides this. I don't want to water cool it, but want something that sits better.
OR
Any ideas how to get the copper shim thinner, so the heatsink touches the GPU

AND

Has anyone found performance gain by sticking a HS on the back of the GPU, using non conductive goop i would imagine, (ceramique)
