Lil bro is looking for a CPU upgrade, but I'm not sure his mobo will take the new chip. (low end board)

His concern is the time it takes to convert/compress his Youtube videos, so I'm thinking quad core haswell or AMD FX build.
He also games on his rig AND records at the same time.

He plays Borderlands, Borderlands Pre-sequel, Minecraft, Amnesia: Dark Descent and Skyrim but I think he will eventually look into the new titles for his Youtube channel.

IMHO he needs a new rig. you see why:
Pentium G3220
2x2 4Gb RAM 9-9-9-24 1333.
ASRock B85M-HDS board. --->NO heatsinked VRMS! Looks like 3+1...
MSI Power Edition 550ti :p
WD ERZX 1Tb HDD ---> formerly mine
Win 7 x64

He says spend no more than $300
That's basically the cheapest 4th gen i5 at the egg, but I don't think his board will handle it.
He says no overclocking either.... I think he should in case he starts to play newer titles.

I stopped caring to follow Intel after I switched to AMD so I have no idea what's what.

barring ram and a graphics card, nothing about that screams "upgrade me!".

300$ canadian is painfully short to be considering upgrading an entire rig.

An i5 and 8gb of ram will eat the entire budget. An i5 44x0 would probably be sufficient. Maybe even an i3?

For that budget, used needs to be considered imo. A used phenom ii x6 and a used 970 ud3p would be around 200$. 30$ or so for used 8gb ram. Sell the pentium, ram, and mobo to someone desiring an htpc, recoup 100$ from that, leaves you with 170$ for a gpu and psu.

That leaves you room to buy a used 270x (maybe even a 280x!) and a power supply to run it all.

Really? I was thinking that Pentium + mobo is trash for recording and gaming...

Not a bad gameplan...
Though $170 won't buy a 270x let alone 280x up here. Not a chance. :-/

No i meant it's such a base level pc, its not worth putting money into. Getting an i5 will murder your budget, and youre still left with not much better than where you started.

Used on ebay, there are 280's are under 150 all day (yes on canada ebay).

Ahhh Okay. I get ya.

Also, all those links are dead, every auction has ended

yeah, they were all ended links. You're a big boy, just showing you the deals are out there if you're willing to go used.

I would honestly try to sell the whole rig as an "Htpc", as its absolutely perfect for that. May get more than you'd think...

Doesn't his big brother want to give him his I5 3570k? :escape::chair:

Ha! That's my 2nd folding rig when my 780 arrives :D

Although, that did cross my mind and if his board had 2 PCIe slots, that's what I would have done.

@Bob
Hahaha yeah :D

Sell it as a complete setup eh?
Yeah, it probably would sell a bit more as an HTPC than if I were to part it out.

Wait, just remembered I still have my beloved i5 2300 and a z77 mobo for it. I can OC that badass chip to 3.5 Ghz for him :)

Would the downgrade back to Sandy Bridge do more "harm" then good even though the 2300 has 4 cores?

I'd bet clock for clock the Pentium is maybe 5% faster then the i5-2300, so even at 3.0 I would go with the i5 because of the extra cores, at 3.5 Ghz it's a no brainer.

5%? I thought it was more like a 10% difference..

So that's what I'l be doing this weekend. Building rigs.
GTX 780 should arrive tomorrow, so I'll need to setup my 2nd folding rig, and I'll swap my bro's parts and hope for the best for Windows surviving the swap.

I figure I can throw in this crappy 1333 cas 9 RAM too. It'll bump him up to 6Gb.

Totally forgot I still had that SB chip. My favorite chip ever, good clocker for a locked chip lol! 3.5 Ghz at stock basically.

I don't think clock for clock it's 10% I may be wrong though. That said, if converting videos and such I'd say more cores would be helpful. That's if the program can utilize all the cores.

SP, Intel is different than AMD in that even a 3+1 phase board will handle the fastest CPU available at stock speeds and voltages with no problem. My suggestion is going with an i3 because it will have two cores and two threads (hyper threading) plus some L3 cache. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117447 That will leave more bucks for RAM or even an SSD.

Really?
Well, I guess Intel isn't as power hungry as AMD :p

Now thing is, I though video encoding and such only works on actual cores like an i5?
I can always use his $300 to snag a better GPU and some RAM if I go ahead with the old SB chip I have.

If he doesn't have the money to spend, then he can wait the extra 3 minutes to render a video. That shouldn't even be close to what the priorities should be.

I think most video rendering software utilizes multiple cores and threads. Handbrake, for instance, surely does.

Intel chips are much less power hungry than AMDs. A 4790k has a TDP of 85 watts at stock frequencies and voltages. Even the cheapest socket 1150 motherbores (3+1 power phase) are rated for 95W TDP.

I think that i5 of yours would do fine for him, and like you said, that would save his money for a decent GPU (960, maybe?) and some ram. That sounds to me like the best way to go about it.

I'll ask him and see what he says :)

New CPU or build the other rig

Well I built him my old i5 2300 rig, and he's loving it!
Everything is smoother, and I can still overclock that chip at least 300Mhz more. Maybe even push 108 BCLK again.

Found some RAM here for him to, that puts him up to 8Gb. All he needs is a better GPU really..

Good to hear, just give him the 780 you just bought?!?!? :D
